Welcome to the Revalidation Homepage

The concept that doctors should at intervals revalidate their license to practice has evolved since first accepted towards the end of the last century. It feels like a long time ago, but at the end of 2012 it is expected that legislation will be in place that requires all doctors with a GMC license to practice in the UK to revalidate that license in the context of their work. To revalidate will therefore be a contemporary statement of fitness to practice.

The approach of the GMC, as agreed in wide consultation, is to apply a generic template of supporting information that all doctors can demonstrate at annual appraisal and accumulate of a five-year period. This together with the absence of unaddressed concerns at a local level will allow the doctor's responsible officer (usually the medical director) to make a positive recommendation to the GMC that the doctor's license should be revalidated.

It is expected that many doctors will be able to use existing information to allow revalidation in year one, based on an accumulation of information already demonstrated in the past five years and information demonstrated at the most recent appraisal.

This website describes the processes in place for a consistent approach to revalidation for all doctors in Wales. We hope that you find it a useful resource and that in conjunction with the GMC's website, it will provide all the information required to support your route to revalidation.
